Penang Laksa (Laksa Pulau Pinang), also known as Asam Laksa, is a speciality of the Malaysian island of Penang. The hearty noodle soup is made with mackerel and its main distinguishing feature is the asam or tamarind, lemongrass, and chilli peppers as the base ingredients which gives the soup a sour and appetizing taste. The fish is poached and then flaked. Other commonly used garnishes include ginger flower buds, pineapple slices, onions, mint, and shrimp paste.
The perfect blend of spicy, sweet, savoury, and umami flavours. Regardless of all the specific recipes, the result is always a rich and strong-flavoured dish that has earned the adoration of both locals and travellers alike.
